TAX REVENUE KEEPS RISING, BUT GROWTH AGAIN TICKS DOWNWARD

January 26, 2012  Report from Rockefeller Institute. States’ tax collections grew for a seventh straight quarter and are now topping pre-recession levels, though they remain below peak levels seen after the recession’s start, according to this Institute report. Looking forward, the rate of revenue growth may slow in light of broad economic trends. New to this quarterly report is an analysis of states’ fiscal positions at the end of fiscal year 2011.

GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: SAFETY NET WEAKENING DESPITE INCREASED NEED

December 19, 2011   This report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is based on their new national survey of General Assistance programs and provides the first comprehensive and published survey in 13 years. TANF BENEFITS FELL FURTHER IN 2011 AND ARE WORTH MUCH LESS THAN IN 1996 IN MOST STATES

THE IMPACT OF STATE INCOME TAXES ON LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN 2010

November 15, 2011   This study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities  looks at the threshold for paying income tax in the states, and compares that to the poverty level. TAX COLLECTIONS: STATES UP, LOCALS DOWN

October 26, 2011   This report by the Rockefeller Institute documents the sixth consecutive quarter of overall state tax revenue growth (10.8% year-over-year), and the third consecutive quarter of overall local tax revenue decline (-1.7% year-over-year). NEW SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS STEEP CUTS IN STATE FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS

October 7, 2011   This a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities describes funding cuts experienced by public schools in a majority of states during the Great Recession.
