Melissa Davlin reports Rep. Leon Smith wants to even the playing field for local businesses.

The Twin Falls Republican is working with Reps. Jeff Nesset, R-Lewiston, and Bill Killen, D-Boise, on soon-to-be-introduced legislation that would allow Idaho to uniformly collect sales tax on Idahoans’ online purchases. It’s a move that’s supported by Magic Valley business owners, Idaho tax commissioners and the Idaho Chamber Alliance.

Similar legislation has been attempted, but has died in the House every year since 2007.

The 78-page proposal adds new sections to the state’s tax code, preparing Idaho to join the 24 states who already participate in the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement.
